There is only one honest answer – it depends. It depends on the type of project and its characteristics.
1. PROJECT SIZE:
The size and scale of the planned object directly affect the required time and material inputs. An example is the difference in designing large facilities, such as halls, compared to smaller ones, like single-family homes. Using repeatable structural elements in larger objects can reduce work time, while smaller projects often pose greater challenges for designers.
2. PROJECT COMPLEXITY:
Complex projects require greater engagement from the architectural team. An example could be the Częstochowa Station, a project with high administrative complexity, or a scientific-training center for the medical chamber, which, despite its unassuming form, was structurally complicated.
3. DESIGN TIME:
The time spent on developing the project is a key factor affecting costs. In our office, we record our activities to ensure transparency and fairness in billing clients. Examples of projects that can be billed on an hourly system include construction supervision or interior design.
4 SCOPE OF SERVICES:
The price of the project also depends on the range of services provided. Additional requirements, such as collaboration with an acoustician or a visual identity designer, can raise the cost of project development.
5. PRODUCT VALUE:
Some design offices use a percentage valuation of the total project budget. This method has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on updating the remuneration to the latest cost estimates.
The Chamber of Architects provides considerable resources on this topic, based on the experiences of its members and colleagues from the Czech Republic.
